Als Jesus weiterging, sah er einen Mann namens Matthäus am Zoll sitzen und sagte zu ihm: Folge mir nach! Und Matthäus stand auf und folgte ihm nach. Und als Jesus in seinem Haus bei Tisch war, siehe, viele Zöllner und Sünder kamen und assen zusammen mit ihm und seinen Jüngern. Als die Pharisäer das sahen, sagten sie zu seinen Jüngern: Wie kann euer Meister zusammen mit Zöllnern und Sündern essen? Er hörte es und sagte: Nicht die Gesunden bedürfen des Arztes, sondern die Kranken. Geht und lernt, was es heisst: Barmherzigkeit will ich, nicht Opfer! Denn ich bin nicht gekommen, um Gerechte zu rufen, sondern Sünder.

As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him. While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" He heard this and said, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."
