Viele der Juden, die zu Maria gekommen waren und gesehen hatten, was Jesus getan hatte, kamen zum Glauben an ihn. Aber einige von ihnen gingen zu den Pharisäern und sagten ihnen, was er getan hatte. 

Da beriefen die Hohepriester und die Pharisäer eine Versammlung des Hohen Rates ein. Sie sagten: Was sollen wir tun? Dieser Mensch tut viele Zeichen. Wenn wir ihn gewähren lassen, werden alle an ihn glauben. Dann werden die Römer kommen und uns die heilige Stätte und das Volk nehmen. Einer von ihnen, Kajaphas, der Hohepriester jenes Jahres, sagte zu ihnen: Ihr versteht nichts. Ihr bedenkt nicht, dass es besser für euch ist, wenn ein einziger Mensch für das Volk stirbt, als wenn das ganze Volk zugrunde geht. Das sagte er nicht aus sich selbst; sondern weil er der Hohepriester jenes Jahres war, sagte er aus prophetischer Eingebung, dass Jesus für das Volk sterben werde. Aber er sollte nicht nur für das Volk sterben, sondern auch, um die versprengten Kinder Gottes wieder zu sammeln. Von diesem Tag an waren sie entschlossen, ihn zu töten. Jesus ging von nun an nicht mehr öffentlich unter den Juden umher, sondern zog sich von dort in die Gegend nahe der Wüste zurück, zu einer Stadt namens Efraim. Dort blieb er mit seinen Jüngern. Das Paschafest der Juden war nahe und viele zogen schon vor dem Paschafest aus dem ganzen Land nach Jerusalem hinauf, um sich zu heiligen. Sie suchten Jesus und sagten zueinander, während sie im Tempel zusammenstanden: Was meint ihr? Er wird wohl kaum zum Fest kommen. Die Hohepriester und die Pharisäer hatten nämlich angeordnet, wenn jemand wisse, wo er sich aufhält, solle er es melden, damit sie ihn festnehmen könnten.

Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 

So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, "What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs. If we leave him alone, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our land and our nation." But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing, nor do you consider that it is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish." He did not say this on his own, but since he was high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God. So from that day on they planned to kill him. So Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews, but he left for the region near the desert, to a town called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples. Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before Passover to purify themselves. They looked for Jesus and said to one another as they were in the temple area, "What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?" For the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should inform them, so that they might arrest him.
